Vegetarian Society to meet July 9
The Chautauqua County Vegetarian-Vegan Society will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 9, at 6 p.m. at the YWCA, 58 S. Portage St., Westfield.
The evening’s speaker will be Harold Brown, who recently appeared in the movie “Peaceable Kingdom.” He is an activist advocating for sustainable food production, social and environmental justice, and peace through non-violence.
Growing up on a Michigan beef farm, Brown instinctively felt that the animals his family were raising for food were not very different from his pet dog or cat. While he noticed that other farm kids struggled with this, like them, he did as he was told and set his feelings aside.
Later in life, a remarkable encounter with a rescued steer at a sanctuary opened the door to Harold’s past, launching him on a life-changing quest to reintegrate the parts of himself that were fragmented as a child. Harold’s quest for healing leads him to connect with other former farmers, and to forge a new path that integrates his love and knowledge of animals with his vision for a more peaceful world.
The menu for the evening will be a modified pot-luck dinner. Salad and dessert will be provided. Those coming are invited, but not required, to bring a nutritious main dish or side dish to share, which will serve eight to 12 people. All food should be vegan (no meat, eggs or dairy products) and, if possible, organic and locally grown. The cost is $8 per person, or $3 for those bringing a dish to share. For more information or to make a reservation, call Gail Erb at 753-7761 (days or weekends), 753-2205 (evenings) or Anne Watkins at 782-4334 or e-mail at email@example.com.
All meetings are open to the public. Those attending do not have to be vegan or vegetarian. Meetings are for those interested in learning about healthy eating and living. The Vegetarian Society is an information and support group for individuals seeking to explore healthy eating through vegetarian, vegan or raw food lifestyles.
