Evergreen Cemetery tour scheduled for Saturday
As part of the town of Portland’s summer season and Brocton Alumni Weekend, a guided tour of Evergreen Cemetery will be given on Saturday morning, beginning promptly at 11 a.m.
The tour will start with brief reminders about the town’s founders and their contributions, followed by discoveries of individuals largely forgotten. For example, how did one of our young citizens, who had only been in the U.S. Army a few months, have a huge effect when Hitler’s forces attacked the Ardennes in 1944? You’ll learn this local Bronze Star hero’s name and what he did.
The tour will meet at the corner of Webster Road and Cemetery Avenue, the very location where Captain James Dunn decided to become our first permanent settler in 1804.
The tour guide will be Town Historian Jim Boltz. Participants should be able to walk on some uneven surfaces during the one-hour stroll.
In case of threatening weather, including electrical storms, the tour will be postponed and a make-up date will be announced.
