Cleaning up the past

Work on cleanup of the Willowbrook Avenue cooling and recycling pond that was part of steel-making operations for Al Tech Specialty Steel and its successors is underway. The $2.7 million cleanup included asbestos removal from a small metering station, clearing and grubbing of the construction limits, removal and treatment of approximately 5.5 million gallons of water along with the removal and disposal of PCB-contaminated sediments. The state Department of Environmental Conservation project site will be backfilled to grade at its completion.
