Attempted murder charge for Buffalo bar manager

BUFFALO – A Buffalo bar manager accused of “launching” an Air National Guardsman down a staircase has been indicted on a second-degree attempted murder charge.

Buffalo media report that an Erie County grand jury on Thursday also indicted 36-year-old Jeffrey Basil on charges of first-degree assault and tampering with evidence. Basil has already pleaded not guilty to other charges in connection with the May 11 bar incident that left 28-year-old William Sager Jr. of Silver Creek in a coma.

Sager remains hospitalized.

Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said the allegation is that Basil attempted to cause the death of Sager by “launching him down the stairs.”

Basil will be arraigned July 25.

Two off-duty Buffalo police officers who’d been working as outside security were suspended after the incident at Molly’s Pub.

Meanwhile the Western New York community continues to show its support.

A benefit for Sager is set for Aug. 3 from 1-6 p.m. at the VFW Post 9249, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., Grand Island. Cost is $20 per ticket, pre-sale only. Donation ticket includes food, drink, entertainment and one sheet of tickets for a basket raffle.
