Fredonia 9-10 Softball All-Stars win title; advance to state tournament

The Fredonia 9-10 Softball All-Stars won the Section 1 championship on Sunday by defeating District 4’s Pittsford, 4-3, and then District 1’s Mel Ott, 11-9, in the championship game. The team will now travel to Nanuet, N.Y. to compete in the state tournament.

The girls backed an outstanding pitching performance by Madison Marsh with outstanding defense and opportunistic offense to capture the sectional championship. During the course of the two games, the girls committed only one error on defense.

Against Pittsford, Marsh threw a complete-game gem, striking out eight, walking four and allowing three hits. The defense was led by second baseman Rebecca Piede with several outstanding plays, first baseman Erin Mansfield with nine putouts and catcher Cierra Smith. Offensively, Marsh again led the way with a double and run scored while Piede and Kyleigh Waterman also added singles and runs scored. Mansfield started the scoring as she came home on a passed ball after reaching base on a walk.

In the championship game, Marsh battled through five innings to get the win with Smith pitching the final inning to get the save.

Kelly Lucas shined both offensively and defensively with three hits and three runs scored along with a spectacular running catch of a line drive to centerfield.

The infield defense was again solid with shortstop Erin Schrantz making several key plays, including throwing a runner out at the plate after a strong relay from Lucas on a ball hit to deep right center field. Third baseman Waterman contributed a key assist on a hard ground ball to third base late in the game to keep the score tied. Offensively, Marsh and Schrantz each contributed a single and run scored with Mansfield scoring two runs as well. Lila Cameron also added a single for Fredonia.
