WCA Foundation awards Mary Lou Messina Memorial Nursing Scholarship
WCA Foundation has named Julie Morton, R.N., an Emergency Department nurse at WCA Hospital for the past 18 years, as the recipient of the 2014 Mary Lou Messina Memorial Nursing Scholarship. In addition to her tenure in the Emergency Department, Mrs. Morton has also aided in the transport of more than 800 critically ill and injured patients on Starflight, the helicopter medevac service whose helipad is located adjacent to WCA Hospital.
Morton is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Gannon University in order to remain current in her clinical skills and educational standards. She plans to utilize that education to continue her long-standing commitment to the patients served by WCA Hospital and Starflight.
Morton is a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SAFE), EMT Paramedic, and Trauma Life Support instructor. In 2010, she was recognized by her peers when she was awarded the WCA Hospital Employee of the Month for demonstrating service excellence.
The Mary Lou Messina Memorial Nursing Scholarship was begun in 2004 by Phil Messina to memorialize his wife who was an energetic, effervescent, intelligent, success-oriented leader. Mrs. Messina’s legacy as a nurse in critical care areas of WCA Hospital helped create the criteria to be met by the scholarship’s annual recipient who is to emulate her personality and love of nursing.
Endowed scholarship funds are one way the WCA Foundation supports WCA Hospital, its employees and the community.
