The Brett Smith Award is given annually to the player voted by the managers and officials of the Chautauqua Babe Ruth League, as being the league’s most outstanding player. The award is named in honor of Smith, a former outstanding individual and player in the league. Pictured above, at right is Steve Keyser, left, receiving the 2014 Jay Wagner Memorial Award from Maher. Keyser is a former player, all-star and Brett Smith Award winner who has since given back to Chautauqua Babe Ruth Baseball in many ways and is currently the head umpire of the league. Each year, the managers, coaches and officers of the Chautauqua Babe Ruth League determine the recipient of this award honoring the late Jay Wagner, who dedicated many years to serving the youth in the Chautauqua Babe Ruth League. This award is currently funded by donations to the league in Wagner’s memory and is presented annually to a chosen individual who not only encourages good sportsmanship, but contributes to the continued success of the league.
