Two blood banks today

Officials at the Community Blood Bank are asking people to roll up their sleeves and donate blood to help stem a blood shortage that occurred over the weekend.

Two blood banks will be held locally to address the problem: one at Westfield Memorial Hospital today 11 a.m. until 4p.m., and the other at Lakeshore Health Care blood drive Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Partner hospitals began experiencing increased blood usage early last week and continued using blood throughout the weekend. Available units were dispatched to area hospitals, but the blood bank now faces depleted inventories

“Hospital blood supplies are dropping each day” said Steve Beeler, Executive Director for the Community Blood Bank. “We’ve been able to move blood to where it is needed but our shelves are nearly empty. This means that we could have trouble meeting unexpected needs if a trauma or emergency occurs.”
