Tax report, combined revals discussed in Pomfret
A yearly tax report and the idea of joining forces for municipal revaluations were topics of discussion during a recent Pomfret Town Board meeting.
Town Tax Collector EvaDawn Bashaw gave the annual summary of collected town and county taxes for the year. Out of a total adjusted warrant of $7,768,509, $6,839,074 was taken in and $940,944 remained unpaid.
“(The amount of unpaid taxes) runs about average, at least for the past couple of years,” Bashaw said.
Pomfret was paid about $1.17 million from the taxes, while Chautauqua County received approximately $5.4 million.
Bashaw indicated the tax report was finalized in June. She added the town collected $11,284 in penalties and fees.
Also during the meeting, Deputy Supervisor Scott Johnston announced Dun-kirk City Councilwoman-at-Large Stephanie Kiyak sent Pomfret a letter gauging interest in working together on property revals.
“Since the city has approved a $4.2 million bond to repair and replace the wall along Lake Front Boulevard, she thinks that this may now be a good time for the city to do a reval,” Johnston said. “She’s asking if the town of Dunkirk and the town of Pomfret are interested in joining with them because it might lead to a more cost-effective quote from potential vendors.”
Pomfret Councilwoman Ann Eckman, who has been spearheading the movement for Pomfret to undertake a reval, said she would reply to Kiyak’s letter and invite city and town of Dunkirk officials to a combined workshop session. A reval firm would lead the workshop to explain the process and answer questions.
The board tentatively scheduled the session for Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. in Pomfret Town Hall.
A proposal from the Fredonia and Silver Creek Pennysaver for a new municipal website service provider was accepted, with a cost of $420 per year with no long-term contract.
“The town clerk’s office is very impressed with the setup and the ease and use (of the new website),” Eckman noted. “They basically built our website for free; they just have to activate it and get the domain transferred (from Digital Towpath).”
Town Attorney Jeffrey Passafaro added his security questions regarding the switch in service providers were answered.
The board accepted a bid from DFT Communications for an upgrade to Microsoft Office 2013 for all town hall computers. The quote is for 12 computers and five hours of labor and costs about $2,000.
Town Clerk Allison Dis-pense announced she re-ceived another $100 scholarship to put toward the cost of a recent conference she attended in Saratoga Springs. The award came from the Chautauqua County Municipal Clerks Association.
