restoration A new life for a Giant

What started as a concern at a Citizens Advisory Committee meeting and later became an issue at the Dunkirk Chamber meeting has brought a fairly happy ending tonight.

Next to the water treatment plant on Lake Shore Drive West at 6 will be a Whispering Giant dedication ceremony. The statue has been restored by the artist who created it more than 40 years ago, Peter Wolf Toth.

His work between the Clarion and Tim Hortons on Lake Shore Drive has caught the attention of many since his arrival here in late June. “I’m confident he’s going to be here for decades to come,” Toth said. “I believe it’s going to be here for over 100 years.”

Besides city residents and officials, the Seneca Nation of Indians also will be a part of a ceremony.

Toth’s creation of the Whispering Giant was historic for the city and western New York. The restoration and dedication today is just as significant.
