Inferno on Thruway
RIPLEY – Traffic was halted around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on the busy New York State Thruway between Westfield and Ripley.
A truck became engulfed in flames, causing traffic to stop for about 45 minutes.
The driver’s 53-foot trailer was saved by the Ripley Fire Department. The trailer was carrying furniture from Indiana to Massachusetts.
Ripley Fire Chief Mark Smith said the cause of the fire is undetermined, but it is possible it happened after an engine leak.
“It took us about 10 minutes to put the fire out,” he said. “There were no injuries or hazardous material in the trailer.”
The name of the driver has not been released at this time. Westfield Tanker and New York State Police assisted.
