Charitable works

  • The Apostolic House of Prayer #2 at 212 Park Ave, Dunkirk will have a clothes give-away on from noon until 3 p.m. today.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Silver Creek sponsored a hot dog sale and rummage sale during the Silver Creek community yard sale the weekend of Aug. 2. Each year the church sets aside 100 percent of the proceeds from the hot dog sale and 50 percent of the proceeds from rummage sale to benefit one of the five fire companies in the Silver Creek area.

This year the congregation donated $595 to the Irving Fire Company. Next year the sales will benefit the Hanover Fire Department.

The congregation thanks the community for supporting Trinity and our local fire companies.

Summer Festival

Blessed Mary Angela Parish will hold its Summer Festival at St. Hyacinth’s School, 296 Lake Shore Dr. E., Dunkirk on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets for the Chiavetta’s chicken barbecue are $9 pre-sale or $9.50 at the door from noon until sold out. The event features music by WDOE’s onsite broadcast, food including Tony’s waffles, variety booths, and family fun.

Worship opportunities

Today, drummers of the area are invited to the celebration of the August full moon from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Labyrinthine Ways Peace Park, located in the East Town of Dunkirk, 3829 Franklin Ave. A ceremonial fire will be lit at 6 p.m. Some chanting may occur, as well as a couple of universal dances of peace – the Navaho “I Walk With Beauty” and “We Circle Around.” Local Unitarian Universalists are especially welcome. Homemade claves will be available, and guests are welcome to bring wooden flutes and any other appropriate instruments.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, chairman and founder of The Cordoba Initiative (TCI), a New York-based organization dedicated to building bridges between Muslims and non-Muslims, will participate in the 2014 Chautauqua Institution events. This year continues TCI’s eight-year collaboration with the Chautauqua Institution to strengthen the peaceful message of interfaith programs.

Imam Feisal will lead Muslim prayers Monday through Friday of that week on Islam and Spiritualism during Week Eight of Chautauqua beginning on Aug. 11.

Programs for children

A Pine Valley Community Vacation Bible School Bible Camp sponsored by the Cherry Creek/Leon United Methodist Church will be held August 18, 19 and 20 from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Called Camp Creation “Camping with Jesus”, it is designed for children ages 3 through 13. Stories, songs, games, crafts, , drama, and a campfire are planned. Families are invited to the last night for activities. All kids are invited to join.

Respect and care of self, respect and care of others is an innovative program that will run from Aug. 18 to 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Westfield. It is offered free to children 3 to 9 years of age of all denominations

Children learn about God’s marvelous mysteries. They experience joy in knowing that His redemptive love became a living reality in Jesus as the Good Shepherd and Light of the world.

Activities in the Atrium direct the child to listen prayerfully to God as revealed in Jesus. The child is put in touch with the true teacher, the Holy Spirit, who speaks to the child and calls him or her into a deeper relationship with God. The child will hear the five parables from the Kingdom of God, they will hear the Good Shepherd parable, and they will enjoy speaking to Jesus at the Prayer Table. The Fredonia Baptist Christian Nursery School will open its doors once again on Sept. 8. The pre-school welcomes 3, 4 and 5 year old for a 2 day or 3 day program. Registration is underway. Call the church office at 679-9966 in the morning for information. Alexis Brandt is director/secretary for the pre-school. She will to answer any questions parents have and send registration applications.

Church dinners

St. John’s United Church, 733 Central Ave., Dunkirk will be holding a Polish sausage dinner Saturday, Aug. 16 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The meal also includes corn on the cob, tomato/mozzarella, cucumber in sour cream, deviled eggs, sliced radishes, potato, roll and pie. Pre-sale tickets are $8.50. The price at the door is $9. Phone 366-0710 for reservations.

The Cherry Creek/Leon United Methodist Church will be holding a Scoop Dinner and Wrapped Gift Auction Saturday, Aug. 16 at the church on Main Street in Cherry Creek. Dinner will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the auction beginning at 6 p.m. Donations will be accepted.

A Swiss steak dinner will be held at Ashville United Methodist Church on Wednesday Aug. 20 beginning at 4:30 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Eat in or take out is available.

The Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, Cardinal Mindszenty Assembly 727, and Councils 929 Dunkirk, 7921 Fredonia, 15113 Gowanda, 5356 Silver Creek and 3100 Westfield are again hosting the 16th annual priests’ appreciation dinner. Nuns and deacons will also be included. The event will be held at Monsignor Bernardo Hall, Holy Trinity Church, Central Avenue Dunkirk, on Sunday, Sept. 7. This event is open to the public and tickets may be purchased from any member of the Knights of Columbus. For further information and reservations, contact Paul Butryn at 863-7201. Tickets are $15 per person which includes an open bar and hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m. and a sit-down family style dinner and dessert at 6:30 p.m.

The Cherry Creek United Methodist Church has scheduled a flea market and pig roast for Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The pig roast will feature two sides, dessert and beverage for $9 from 11 a.m. until sold out. There will be a basket silent auction. All proceeds benefit the church fuel bill. To reserve a 10 x 10 spot, send a request to Cherry Creek United Methodist Church, P.O.
