D. Kent Lawhead
D. Kent Lawhead, 79, of Dunkirk passed away Friday afternoon, August 22, 2014, at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk.
Born on November 2, 1934 in Bradford, Pa., Kent was the son of the late Donald and Helen (Kenney) Lawhead.
Mr. Lawhead served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He had worked as a self employed building contractor and attended St. Joseph Church.
A resident of the area for most of his life, Kent was a member of the Dunkirk Moose Lodge No. 89 and the Masons.
An avid golfer, he was a former member of Shorewood Country Club who actively volunteered his “Grandpa Taxi” service for their Junior Golf Program.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Mary Anne (Burke) Lawhead; five sons, Lee (Linda) Law-head of St. Pete Beach, Fla., Michael (Valorie) Lawhead of Fredonia, David (Tina) Lawhead of Bartow, Fla., Michael O’Connell of Dunkirk, and James O’Connell of Fredonia; seven daughters, Cheri (Dennis) Patti of St. Pete Beach, Fla., Kathleen (William) Stelmach of Fredonia, Karen O’Connell of Dunkirk, Susan (Daniel) McKinnon of Forestville, Barbara (Timothy) Schwertfager of Fredonia, and Jayne (Allan) DeJonghe and Jill (Steven) Crane, both of Dunkirk; 27 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:15 from the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 o’clock in St. Joseph Church. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
