Bar manager charged with murder in Sager’s death

BUFFALO (AP) – Charges against a Buffalo bar manager have been upgraded following the death of a patron he’s accused of shoving down a flight of stairs.

Jeffrey Basil pleaded not guilty Monday to a new indictment charging him with second-degree murder, manslaughter and evidence tampering in the death of former Silver Creek resident William Sager Jr.

Sager died on July 31, more than two months after suffering severe brain trauma in the fall inside Molly’s Pub in Buffalo. Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita III says 36-year-old Basil is accused of pushing Sager and then tampering with a video surveillance system so it couldn’t be used as evidence.

Basil had been charged with attempted murder and assault before Sager died.

He’s being held without bail.
