Richard E. Miga

Richard E. Miga, 78, of Fredonia, died Wednesday morning (Aug. 20, 2014) in Rochester following a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 21, 1935 in Dunkirk, the son of the late Edward and Agatha (Surma) Miga.

A lifelong Fredonia resident, Mr. Miga had been employed as an assistant superintendent for BOCES in Fredonia. He was a member of the National Science Teachers Association. At one time, he had been a nature columnist for the OBSERVER.

An avid bird watcher, he was a member of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Audubon Society and the Buffalo Ornithology Society.

He was a parishioner of various area Catholic Churches and also belonged to the Fredonia Beaver Club and the Moniuszko Club.

Survivors include three sons, Richard John (Margaret) Miga of Lakeview, Daniel (Rhonda) Miga of Rochester and David (Amanda) Miga of Ashland, Ore.; one daughter, Janis (Ronald) Szot of Dunkirk; five grandchildren, Corinne Miga, Kristin Miga, Robert Ohl, Zachary Miga and Rachel Miga.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass which will be celebrated Monday morning, Sept. 1, at 11 o’clock in Blessed Mary Angela Parish Church of St. Hyacinth. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cornell Lab of Ornithology, or the Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary.
