Silver Creek tops Eden in first game of season

SILVER CREEK – Hannah Seiders scored the game-winning goal 32 minutes into the second half to give the Silver Creek Black Knights a 1-0 victory over Eden on Tuesday in non-league girls high school soccer.

Janelle Cossin set up the goal as she raced past a pair of Eden defenders and sent a cross to the back-side post where Seiders was waiting.

“It was wet and muddy, and Hannah, instead of trying to get a foot on it, took it off her stomach and put it in,” Silver Creek coach Kevin Rice said, describing the goal. “We had many opportunities. With a wet ball and not good footing, we couldn’t get any real good strikes. Hannah had already missed a couple, so she bodied it in and it worked.”

The game marked the first of the season for both teams, but was the first time the Black Knights played against a team with a different uniform, as they were unable to play a scrimmage before the start of the season. During Tuesday’s contest, Rice experimented, putting players at different positions throughout the game. One player in particular who shined was Tricia Pfleuger.

“I thought she was dynamite for us (Tuesday),” Rice said. “She is usually an outside midfielder, but she played three different positions. I couldn’t take her off the field. No matter where I put her, she played very well.”

Silver Creek returns to action Friday when it hosts Westfield/Brocton in the first league match of the season.

Chautauqua Lake 8, Panama 0

MAYVILLE – Courtney Hewes had a hat trick and Chautauqua Lake opened its season with an 8-0 win over Panama.

The Lady Thunderbirds (1-0) built up a 4-0 halftime lead and Gina Sena stopped all six shots she faced en route to the shutout.

Sarah Russin added two goals while Bree Girdlestone, Emily Corwin and Abby Andriaccio each chipped in a goal for Chautauqua Lake. Girdlestone, Corwin and Brittany Fardink each had an assist.

“We were hoping for a good contest and a good win,” said third-year coach Ryan Smith, who had no seniors on last year’s team. “We’ve been practicing hard and are looking forward to a more veteran team this year.”
